About HowMuchDoItNeed

HowMuchDoItNeed exists because most home improvement calculators on the internet are not really calculators. They are lead-generation forms disguised as tools.

You search "how much paint do I need for a 12x12 room." You land on a page that looks helpful. You enter your room dimensions. Then it asks for your zip code. Then your email. Then your phone number. The "result" is not 4 gallons of paint. The result is 3 phone calls from contractors who bought your contact information.

Solar panel calculators are the worst offenders. Most of them are operated by installer referral networks. Enter your address and within hours your phone rings with competing quotes from companies who paid $20 to $50 for your lead. The calculator was never designed to help you. It was designed to capture your data.

What HowMuchDoItNeed does differently

Every calculator on HowMuchDoItNeed runs entirely in your browser. Your dimensions, your measurements, your project details: none of it leaves your device. There is no server processing your inputs. There is no database storing your information. The math happens in JavaScript on your screen, and when you close the tab, it is gone.

We do not ask for your email address because we have nothing to send you. We do not ask for your phone number because we have no one to connect you with. We do not ask for your zip code because the formula for cubic yards of concrete does not depend on where you live.

How the calculators work

Our formulas use industry-standard assumptions vetted against published reference data. Paint coverage uses 350 square feet per gallon (conservative, not the manufacturer-optimistic 400). Concrete calculations include a 10 percent waste factor that contractors budget for but DIY guides forget. Solar estimates use real peak sun hour data by region and the current 30 percent federal tax credit.

Every calculator shows you the formula and the assumptions. If your situation differs from the standard case (textured walls, irregular room shapes, unusual material specs), the explanation text tells you how to adjust. We would rather give you a clear estimate with honest caveats than a precise number with hidden assumptions.

Who builds this

HowMuchDoItNeed is an independent project. It is not owned by a paint company, a home improvement retailer, or a contractor referral network. It is supported by respectful advertising (small, clearly labeled ads that never interrupt your calculations) and by the belief that free tools done well earn trust, and trust earns return visitors.

If you find an error in a formula, a broken calculator, or a question that our tools do not cover yet, the contact information is below. Real feedback from real users is how these tools improve.
